Moving Forward

I’m sure that you’ve experienced moments in your life when you’ve felt that you were doing nothing but coasting. You live in your parent’s house; you go to school; maybe hang out with a few friends once in a while; and the rest of your free time is spent on the job you need to help get you through your everyday expenses.

It’s an endless, monotonous cycle that seems to get heavier the more you mature and grow.

So, how do you stop it and prevent the endless rewinds from becoming your whole life?

A lot of people ask this question; maybe to themselves or to some other people. So, I thought I’d tell you a bit about myself and maybe you’d find some support or inspiration that you may not have found otherwise.

Develop Yourself:

Now, the first thing you have to keep in mind is that everyone goes through exactly the same thing that you’re going through right now. Many of them still are. You’re not alone.

What you also have to understand is that the only way to break out of this repetitive cycle is to continuously find ways to develop yourself. To grow. The more you learn, the more things you can try and do.

I’ll give you an example. When I was 18 years old, I got my first job as a cashier at a department store. It was awesome; my co-workers were awesome; my manager was awesome. The whole package was awesome. But, all good things come to an end. Fast-forward two years and I was dealing with things like car expenses, school fees and other things that grownups are forced to face in the real world.

Suffice it to say, I was in a tough financial spot with my family. I would pick up shifts till I was working forty hours or more a week and then come home and drill down on my homework till I was sure I could get A’s on every quiz, paper, lab and exam. Oftentimes, I’d be sleeping on my computer desk till 3 am in the morning afterwhich I’d snap awake to finish the lab assignment.

To invest so much time and effort into my schoolwork may have seemed excessive, but to me, I was moving forward. I was developing myself and giving myself a shot at a future that I yet couldn’t see.

After another year of schoolwork and endless days at work, I was slammed in the face with the fact that because I was helping my family pay off some things, I had no money for myself. I had to do something else to create an extra line of income, just for me.

Luckily, I was already at the point where I could do something like that.

Take a Risk:

It was a crazy idea; I thought of it while mulling in front of a computer screen just like I’m doing right now. I could tutor people in computer science! My grades were good; I had learned extra because of the effort and time I invested in schooling. So, now, it had come full circle.

What freaked me out most was that I had zero experience in running a business when that idea came into my head. How would I attract clients? How could I do it in such a way that I wasn’t costing more money than I was earning? Also, since I had no time to meet people outside of work because of my busy work schedule, how on earth could I find time to tutor people?

At this point, my head started spinning over all the little details.

You’ll hit this point too; maybe you already have.

Here’s the thing, though. With every second you spend worrying about potential problems, you waste an equal amount of time that could be spent coming up with potential solutions.

So, with a little bit of coaxing from one of my close friends, I shut down my worrying and posted an advertisement in a free forum offering my services.
